Our Story

Learn About Salmmiya

Salmmiya was founded in 2015 by young men and women from the neighborhoods of Khartoum State. Initially trained in nonviolent resistance techniques, these individuals returned to their communities to train more young people in their local clubs, with the aim of expanding their message.

Obstacles

The group faced many obstacles from the regime but was revitalized during the Sudanese revolution in 2018, focusing on nonviolence as a daily philosophical practice.

Bashir's fall

After Bashir's fall, Salmmiya intensified its efforts, training more youth across Khartoum state to empower them with the tools and strategies of nonviolent resistance. However, the October 25 coup significantly disrupted their plans, forcing the group to adapt.

The Butterfly Effect

They began introducing the Butterfly Effect methodology to resistance committees, including those with a history of a violent approach, such as the "angry" group, and Salammiya also implemented local governance discussion sessions for committees within Khartoum. In addition, the group organized film screenings to showcase nonviolent movements from other countries.

The group held workshops on April 12, but the outbreak of war on April 15 forced them to halt their activities, displacing many participants. Salmiya then shifted to holding online sessions, focusing on the role of nonviolent resistance in countering hate speech, promoting social cohesion, and providing psychological support to activists.

From the start

We've known that our strength lies in nonviolence. It's the weapon we have, and they don’t. Their goal was to contain us through violence. We understood that if we responded with violence, we would be defeated. We realized that nonviolence is the only ‘weapon’ they lack. It's up to us, together, to wield this powerful tool for change.

Our mission is clear and inspiring. Pacifism is about bringing about social or political change through nonviolent means based on the philosophy and tactics of resistance. It combats violent rhetoric and advocacy while upholding the principles of peace, justice, and equality. This mission calls for action, and we invite you to join us in this noble cause.

Pacifism is a collective effort in which individuals peacefully advocate for change, often through non-violent protests, civil disobedience, and grassroots organising. Participants unite around a common cause and use their voices and actions to challenge injustice and promote positive social transformation.
